Okay, get ready as this will be long…
World of Warcraft is a game that is constantly updating and expanding. Due to this, to play WoW it costs 15 dollars a month to play. You can, alternatively, purchase pre-paid cards for certain amounts of gametime if you cannot afford to continually pay 15 dollars a month.
When you buy the game retail (from a box), you are basically paying to upgrade your account. This allows you full access to the game in addition to the 15 dollars a month. You can also upgrade online, which will allow your account to play the full version of World of Warcraft.
The game client itself is free to download from the website (or from the CDs in the box), but you MUST upgrade your account in order to play.
There are two expansions; The Burning Crusade and Wrath of the Lich King. TBC includes a new continent, flying mounts, more items, you can power your way up to 70, and much more. WOTLK ups the level cap to 80, with more gear, a new continent, new mounts, dungeons, and more. Without either, you will not be able to go to these continents and you will only be able to reach level 60. You can play without them, but it’s recommended you get both.
Buying the expansions (buying the upgrade online or purchasing the box from a retailer) will not affect your monthly sub of 15 dollars per month. The base cost of the expansion (the upgrade or, again, the game key from a retail box) is all you pay, and you can continue playing.

Yes, you’d have to buy initial game costs to ugrade the account from a trial account to a full account.
Yes, you’ll then have monthly charges to maintain your account of $15 per month.
No, you don’t need the expansion, you can play pre-expansion content and level up to whatever pre-expansion level cap is. But when you’re bored with that, you’ll likely want to get the expansions. But you don’t need them now.

After your trial is up; if you want to continue playing, you will need to buy it from the store. Once you register it you’ll have to pay the subscription fee online(credit card is most used for this type of payment), or buy time cards from the store. It’s $13-15 if you pay for it online depending on the type of subscription plan you get. If you pay for 6 months at a time you will save the most, the next are 3 months, then monthly. If you buy time cards from the store, it’ll be $14.99 including tax per month.
About expansions: You don’t NEED to buy any expansions to keep playing, BUT they add a ton of content and allow you to get past level 60. So, if you wanted to, you could stay at level 60 forever and not worry about buying expansions. I wouldn’t recommend though, as it’s flooded with WoW’s newest class: Death Knight. So it’d be no fun staying at 60.
Burning crusade(2nd expansion) you should only get once you reach level 58(Or get it right away if you want to make a Draenai or Blood Elf.) Wrath of the Lich King(Latest one) you shouldn’t get until you’re at least level 68.
So, it can be pretty expensive to play. WoW $20, BC $20, WotLK $40 + the months of subscription fees. Most people play for a year+ and playing for a year, subscription fees are around $180.
It’s worth the amount of money it costs for the time you’ll get out of it, but I wouldn’t recommend playing. I played it for 2-3 years on and off and got somewhat addicted. It can and will ruin your life if you let it. Maybe you won’t even get addicted to it, but most people do. Your decision, though. Good luck with whatever you decide.

Alright, this is how it works, you buy the game (and the expansion packs if you want) and ontop of that you have to pay 15 bucks a month (I know it sucks but it’s a good game, very addictive though). One of the more recent expansion packs (The burning crusade) will allow you to choose from two more races (Blood elf and draenie (if i spelled draenie right)) And will let you get to level 70. The most recent expansion pack is Wrath of the lich king (WOTLK) which lets you pick to be a Death Knight (DK) which you can only play when one of your characters are level 55 or higher and your DK gets a free mount and everything. I hope i helped, Enjoy the game!

Your trial version limits you to level 20.
If you already have it installed, all you really need is the registration key which you can buy online. Even when buying the box version, you’re really only paying $5 for packaging, and the first $15 month. (They give it to you for “free”).
After that, you pay the $14.99 or whatever per month it costs as you play. As for the expansions, you need them, but you don’t need them immediately. If you only buy vanilla wow, you will be limited to level 60, cannot go to Outland or Northrend, and you cannot be the Blood Elves, or Draenei.
So if you want to play either of those races, and to get to level 70, you’ll need the Burning crusade expansion, and if you want to get to level 80, you’ll need the lich king expansion, you cannot level past the 60/70 caps without the next expansion. Which you will want to do, very few people do the level 60 old endgame stuff anymore, because everyone is focused on the current endgame content at level 80.
But again, you dont have to pucrchase them at once it’ll probably take a month or two to get to 60 (depending on your playtime), and maybe another month to get to 70. Unless you are completely ignoring the story, you will have plenty of time to enjoy the game without feeling like you’re getting raped in the wallet. When you hit 58, you can get a new registration key that unlocks BC, and 68 to get the reg key to unlock WoTLK.
Or buy the CDs, which i reccomend, you have a backup copy that way and not have to download it all again.

Trial version allows you to play up to 10 days then its over and you can buy the game(s) you need the first one to play all of them and it is 15 dollars for 1 month and 30 dollars for 2 months . You do not need all the expansions but they help because you have a new race (blood elf, draenie) and you get new mounts and you get to go to different places.

I suggest You get the original game and play for a few months . if You like it than get the Burning Crusades and so forth. I play it far to much but I have met a lot of people playing and have become friends with many. So it would be hard to just quit. My goal is to have 3 toons @ level 80 in 6 months or less. Right now i have a 63 Death Knight, 60 Warrior , 47 Paladin, 30 night elf Hunter and a 30 dwarf Hunter. As you see im busy. Good luck Looks like a lot of people have given great advise.

You can play the game without the expansions but you will only get to level 60. Yeah you need to upgrade your account after the 10 day free trial is over.

    This is how it works…..
First you use your 10 day trial until it expires. Once that is over with you can either go to the store and buy it or just buy and download the full version onto your account. If you decide to get it at the store you must enter the key code onto your account. Once you get to lvl 60 is when you want to buy the first expansion Burning Crusade. It works the same way as the full version of WoW does. Either you buy at store and enter key code or you download it off of the site. It will let you get to lvl 70 and be close to the best lvl you can get. Once you get to lvl 70 is when you want to upgrade to the next expansion pack which is called Wrath of the Lich King. This expansion is the most recent expansion out. It will allow you to get to lvl 80 and you will be the highest lvl in Wow that you can get to. Now to answer some of your other questions. No you don’t need the other expansions to play but like I said wait till you get to the certain lvls before you buy the next expansion. When you use the Burning Crusade version you will be able to make a blood elf and be able to make a character a paladan. In the Wrath of the Lich King you will have to have some other character above lvl 55 so you can get a Death Knight (which own in pvp). The Death Knight also starts out as a lvl 55 and is easier to start off. Your other question asked if you would have to pay on top of that and the answer is yes $15 a month but it is very much worth it. A tip that will save you some money is before you upgrade always use the trial versions so you get free time. I would start with the Burning Crusade trial and start that when you are about lvl 58. Then when you get to 70 use the Wrath of the Lich King trial. Again this is way worth the money, it is the best game i have ever played and I think you will enjoy it a lot. Thank you for reading!! Have fun!! =D
